Job Description:
Our client is a leading Medical Device organization who, due to
expansion, are seeking a Business Development Director (Search &
Evaluation) who will assist their Head of Business Operations to
plan and execute on their Pharma strategy for product candidate
nomination, evaluation and onboarding. Initially focused on
prospecting and evaluation for assets and opportunities in
strategic areas of interest, the role will expand into conducting
diligence and managing transactions to advance the product
pipeline.Role/Responsibilities:Working under direction of our
clients Pharma Divisions Head of Business Operations, and in
cooperation with multi-disciplinary team of colleagues, to manage
and deliver on the following tasks and objectives:
- Develop asset search-and-select priorities and strategy to be
aligned with the company's overall business strategy and
in-licensing strategy. Build relationships with academic and
industry originators.
- Apply knowledge of disease biology, leading research figures,
treatment paradigms and new and emerging therapies to identify and
evaluate drug assets for development as inhalation therapies, via
repurposing/repositioning, industry partnerships or academic
in-licensing, and sourced from contact networks, scientific and
industry conferences, or research and development landscape
survey.
- Serve as a thought-leader within a cross-functional team (e.g.,
R&D, ClinOps, RA/QA, legal/IP, finance, and commercial),
providing scientific and technical Subject Matter Expertise to
assessment of therapeutic opportunities and promising science and
technologies across the preclinical and clinical spectrum.
- Authority Assignment: During periods of absence of the General
Manager and the Head of Business Operations, has the authority to
act on behalf of our client in commercial interactions with third
parties.
- Manage technical and commercial due diligence of proposed
transactions. Serve as the primary point of contact with the
external partner throughout the deal process. Lead and manage
cross-functional interactions to conduct detailed product
evaluation process. Conduct primary and secondary market research
and generate revenue forecasts.
- Draft business proposals and plans for proposed transactions,
including initial product development plan. Develop business case
and build consensus for deal rationale with senior management.
- Participate in structuring and negotiation of term sheet,
including detailed analysis of comparator deal and valuation
scenarios, P&L and rNPV modeling to align on proposed
terms.
- Develop agreements for licensing and acquisition transactions
and facilitate conclusion of the deals.
- Oversee post-deal partner relationship and cross-functional
knowledge transfer. Develop plans for execution and ensure delivery
of key objectives from collaboration, partnership and service
contracts.
- Travel as required to industry conferences, partner and client
meetings, and collaborating institutions.Qualifications:
- MD or PhD in life sciences, plus at least 10 years' experience
within pharma / biotech industry or 5+ years in venture capital /
life-sciences investing;
- In-depth knowledge of the full drug development process,
including regulatory and commercial aspects;
- Track record of owning, driving, and closing new product
acquisition projects from inception to execution, to include
valuation, diligence, deal engineering and negotiation;
- Scientific/technical acumen combined with high integrity and
high EQ;
- A strategic thinker with outstanding business instincts who can
help chart the course and translate into actionable, value-creating
results for the organization;
- Excellent analytical and organizational skills with the ability
to make sound business judgments; must be able to prioritize
projects to manage both current transactions and discussions to
support future deal-flow;
- Energetic, resourceful, adaptable self-starter with strong
executive presence, and the ability to work effectively in a
dynamic, entrepreneurial environment that requires "win-win"
collaboration at all levels;
- Must have exceptional ability to rapidly synthesize
opportunities in written and verbal presentations to executive
management and external stakeholders;
- Priority, and consideration of enhanced terms of service, will
be given to outstanding applicants with one or more of the
following attributes:
- additional years of experience in product search & selection,
deal origination, licensing and/or portfolio management functions
within pharma / biotech or investment industries;
- track record of R&D, clinical or professional experience
related to inhalation therapy;
- MBA or similar business qualification
- Office-based in San Mateo, California (must be US citizen or
