Job Description

Sr. Director, Head of Technical Engineering, Corporate Engineering

Reporting to the VP of Corporate Engineering and Facilities Operation (CEF), the Sr. Director, Technical Engineering, Corporate Engineering is responsible for developing and executing a world-class engineering strategy, that supports Gilead's ambitious Global Master Plan. The Corporate Engineering team within the Company has the responsibility to develop short- and long-term strategies to advance our physical infrastructure (laboratories, pilot plants, and office buildings), associated with approximately 7M square feet of existing real estate, located in over 35 countries. As part of the Master Plan, Gilead Sciences plans to design and implement the next level, best-in-class facilities to support its corporate strategy and breakthrough science, as well as continue to modernize campuses worldwide to support our culture ambitions. This position will be responsible for technical engineering excellence associated with the delivery of new and renovated infrastructure at our corporate sites worldwide. Key to the success in this role will be technical depth in engineering, cGMP regulations and an appreciation for social responsibility imperatives (ESG and sustainability focus).

The candidate must be a highly qualified Engineering / Operations leader with extensive experience in the Pharmaceuticals and/or Biotechnology industry and have demonstrated success in leading teams to deliver large, complex, and highly technical construction design projects such as GMP manufacturing facilities and initiatives involving multiple stakeholders and/or sites. In addition, we are looking for someone that has a passion for employee development and building a strong culture of excellence, teamwork, accountability, and inclusion within the group.

Principal Activities, Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • As the leading authority of Technical Engineering, serve as the leader of the Corporate Centre of Excellence for engineering standards and systems.
  • Advance the innovation agenda within the team and seek out disruptive technologies and business processes that add value to the overall enterprise
  • In close partnership with the Digital Operations team, develop a maturation model for Pharma 4.0 adoption within Gilead's corporate sites
  • Maintain a high performing team of technical engineers to help drive successful implementation of projects such as ground up constructions and asset life cycle projects across multiple sites globally
  • Work closely with all functions in Corporate Operations, including Workspace Strategy & Design, Project Management, EH&S, Corporate PMO, Procurement, Corporate Security, Finance, IT, and Legal
  • Develop relationship and continuous partnership with various key stakeholders from Commercial, Pharmaceutical Development & Manufacturing, R&D, and G&A functions
  • Work with external partners such as consultants, General Contractors, Architectural firms, MEP engineers and technical experts, landlords, and city councils throughout the project delivery process
  • Develop technical strategy and roadmap to support our vision of being a group that has a passion for Operational Excellence and continues to look at innovative ways to ensure our campuses are efficient, more connected and operationally reliable
  • Partner with Project Management to identify and drive project and operational cost savings through process design improvements, digital or technology adoption, and value engineering efforts
  • Drive the development, implementation and continuous improvement of corporate level engineering standards and best practices
  • Lead and curate a Corporate wide Engineering Community of Practice forum to encourage learning through sharing of best practices and to implement standards across locations/groups
  • Report engineering performance metrics using relevant engineering categories and KPI's
  • Recruit, develop and maintain the team's technical and interpersonal skills; continuously assess and support the development of skills and capabilities in the group
  • Develop and maintain a scalable team of engineers and engineering service delivery partners to support on-demand engineering needs of our campus and locations worldwide
  • Provide support and technical SMEs during regulatory audits and inspections
  • Manage staffing, resources, and workload requirements
  • Responsible for talent development, succession planning, and for building a strong team environment conducive to continuous learning and growth
  • Oversee the engineering document control system that houses GMP and non-GMP building documentation including drawings and specifications
  • Forecast and manage the department's budgets and cost center
  • Must be prepared and able to travel domestically and internationally as required

    Knowledge, Skills and Experience
    • B.S. in Engineering is required in the following disciplines - Civil/Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Process/Plumbing, with a P.E. license preferred
    • MBA or MS is preferred
    • A minimum of 14 years of direct technical/engineering operations, design and leadership experience preferably in the Pharmaceutical and/or Biotech industry.
    • Experience in leading or actively participating in multi-disciplinary teams to deliver large capital projects (> $50MM) is expected
    • Knowledge of the latest enterprise-level engineering design and modeling tools such as Autodesk products (AutoCAD, RevIt, Navisworks) and BIM
    • Knowledge of engineering automation platforms, technologies, and architecture (e.g., SCADA, PCS, Data Historian, BMS)
    • Experience in managing and leading a team of highly technical and experienced engineers, with a record of developing and mentoring talent is expected
