Job Description:

Hundreds of millions of human genomes and exomes are expected to be sequenced over the next decade, driven by steady innovations in sequencing technologies pioneered by Illumina. The enormous quantities of genomic data being generated in collaboration with our partners worldwide represents a major opportunity to develop novel data-driven approaches to extract clinically actionable insights from germline and somatic genomes, and apply this towards improving human health. To accelerate the adoption of clinical cancer sequencing, Illumina is recruiting a principal investigator to lead a cancer genomics research group at Illumina R&D. - The ideal candidate will hold a MD or PhD degree, and possess a rare combination of strong quantitative and computational skills and clinical training in oncology. - The primary aim is to interpret both coding and noncoding somatic mutations, using a combination of approaches, that may include deep learning, statistical genetics, and high-throughput CRISPR saturation mutagenesis experiments. - The successful candidate needs to have a proven publication record in cancer genetics in top tier journals, with a strong computational background suited to work on the development of novel computational approaches. - Specific areas of focus may include classification of benign vs pathogenic variants by utilizing whole genome and functional genomic data, characterizing selective constraint, and modeling background mutational processes. The position allows for substantial sequencing resources to generate data in pursuit of cutting-edge human genetics research, which allows us to pursue strategies at scales not possible in academia. - Publication is a top goal, as our aim is to increase the value of the clinical information that can be gleaned from the genome, which will result in more people to be sequenced in routine clinical practice. - Algorithms and methods will be published in peer-reviewed journals in order to improve the accuracy, throughput, and reproducibility of genome interpretation, thereby removing barriers to clinical adoption of sequencing. - In addition to strong analytical skills, this position will require a high degree of initiative, autonomy, and scientific collaboration.Responsibilities:Lead a group developing novel algorithms for interpreting coding and noncoding somatic mutations by integrating information from detailed clinical phenotypes, functional genomics, selective constraint, and protein structure.Lead scientific collaborations with Illumina's academic, nonprofit, and industry partners, and lead a multidisciplinary team focused on achieving these aims.Publish and disseminate methods and findings to the benefit of the wider genetics community.Work with executive leadership across the company to shape Illumina's cancer strategy.Requirements:MD or PhD, expert in cancer genetics and genomics with proven publication record and strong computational skillsPossesses strong communication skills, with the ability to present complex scientific ideas to clinical, scientific, and industry audiences.Be willing to work in a fast paced, competitive environment, and hold a strong record of successful delivery of complex scientific projects and publications under tight timelines.Concerns regarding COVID-19 continue as positive cases are experienced in the communities in which we operate.
